Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in sediment cores from the Western Scheldt river (Belgium): analytical aspects and depth profiles

Abstract: AbstnctA mpid and simple malltical method for the detmination of organochlorines, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and selected organochlorinated psticides (OCPs) md orgmobrcmines, such m polybrominated diphenyl ethm @BDEs), in sediment samples was optimised using CRM 536 @CBs in freshwater sediment). The method involved a hot Soxhlet extraction that reduced the straction time io 2 h. Elemental sulphur, which is present in sedimmts md may interfere during the malysis, was removed by mems of mpper powd… Show more

“…The results were also in the range of data found in sediments from tropical areas in Asia: the Mekong River delta in Vietnam (Carvalho et al, 2008) and riverine and coastal waters of Surabaya in Indonesia (Ilyas et al, 2011). The levels were lower compared to concentrations reported for industrialized areas in Europe and United States of America (Covaci et al, 2005;Vane et al, 2007;Vives et al, 2007;Castells et al, 2008;Jiao et al, 2009;Martinez et al, 2010;Mohammed et al, 2011) (Table 2). The proportion of the 6 indicator PCBs (Σ 6 PCBs) to Σ 18 PCBs in this study were between 80 and 88% (with a mean value of 84%).…”

“…up to 4 or 5 µg/kg dry weight for BDE 99 and BDE 47 respectively in River Viskan, Sweden 1995 (Sellström et al, 1998); 105-400 µg/kg dw for the sum of 27 PCBs (ICES 7 PCBs 1 contributed about half of that) and up to 272 µg/kg dw for the sum of 10 tri-to hexa-BDEs (including the 6 commonly monitored ones) in the Scheldt river, Belgium (Covaci et al, 2005;Vane et al, 2007). In the UK, high levels organic pollutants have been observed in the Mersey, Clyde, and Tyne estuaries (Vane et al, 2007;Vane et al, 2010;Nicolaus et al, 2015).…”

“…On the other hand, bottom sediment is an important sink and reservoir of anthropogenic pollutants and has large impact on their distribution, transport, and fate in aquatic environment. Furthermore, vertical profile in dated sediment core can be used to estimate historical depositions of POPs into aquatic environments (Covaci et al 2005;Song et al 2004). In view of the above, contamination of dioxins in the sediment cores from TGD area was screened in this paper to evaluate the environmental safety.…”
