“…During both imbibition and radicle-emergence processes, the most abundant PA(S) was Spd, whereas over the postgermination growth period it was Put. Also, Spd was the most abundant PA(S) in seeds of Picea abies (Huang and Villanueva 1992), Triticum durum (Anguillesi et al 1990), Zea mays (Lozano et al 1989), Hordeum vulgare (Nielsen 1990) and Cicer arietinum (Gallardo et al 1992). The endosperm of Zea mays contained no Spd, and the most abundant PA(S) was Put, followed by Spm (Torrigiani et al 1988).…”

“…In Picea abies seeds, the most abundant PA is Spd, followed by Spm and Put, the latter being scarcely detectable (Huang and Villanueva, 1992). High Spd concentrations have in fact been found in embryos of Triticum durum (Anguillesi et al, 1990), Zea mays (Lozano et al, 1989), Hordeum vulgare (Nielsen, 1990) and Cicer arietinum (Gallardo et al, 1992a). Recently, the PA amounts in whole seeds have been quantified in three endemic legume species living at different altitudes and only the Put amounts changed with altitude (Angosto and Matilla, 1993).…”

“…seeds that can be stored with a low moisture content (Bewley and Black, 1994), retain viability for varying periods and with time they succumb and die. There is generally a gradual decline in germinability and the subsequent vigour of the resultant seedling (Leopold, 1980;Anguillesi et al, 1990;Alsadon et al, 1995;Rice and Deyer, 2001), associated with a higher sensitivity to stress upon germination, and eventually a loss of the ability to germinate.…”
