Poly(P‐phenylene sulfide) hexafluoroarsenate: A novel conducting polymer

Abstract: Poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is a melt‐ and solution‐processible polymer which on treatment with AsF5 forms a blue‐black material with a conductivity of 1–10 Ω−1 cm−1. Thermopower measurements indicate that the resulting polymer is p type, consistent with partial oxidation of the PPS by the AsF5. The rate and extent of this doping process prove to be particularly sensitive to the degree of crystallinity of the starting polymer. There is also evidence of crosslinking of the polymer chains during the reaction… Show more

“…The AsF 5 was purified as described earlier. 13 Doping of the polyacetylene was performed as described in the work of Ikehata et al' 1 Final compositions were determined by weigh; uptake. All manipulations of the polymer were carried out either on a vacuum line or in an inert atmosphere dry box.…”

“…Fortunately, the development of new analytical tools continues to provide new approaches to characterization. In particular one relatively recent spectroscopic technique, cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) 13 C NMR, 2 has proved extremely useful in providing new insights into the structure and reactions of these materials.…”

“…370 In conclusion, the XPS spectra of doped PPS are different each other depending on the dopant species. These results reflect the different doping mechanisms, the formation of charge-transfer structure (for SbF 5 ), the occurrence of side reaction (for S0 3 ) and so on. Since the PPS films doped with SbF 5 have the highest conductivity in the atmosphere among our samples, charge-transfer structure seems to be important for increasing the conductivity in stable state.…”

“…Frommer et a!. have reported a remarkably high conductivity, 200 S em -l, for AsF 5 -doped PPS film cast from AsF 3 solution.1 For the conduction mechanism of AsF 5 -doped PPS, several ideas such as the formation of benzothiophene structure 2 and intermolecular crosslinking 3 have been proposed from the results of elementary analysis and IR spectral measurements. However, it is necessary to obtain more detailed information on the doping mechapism of electron-acceptor doped PPS in order to discuss the conduction mechanism.…”
