Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) Fiber/Epoxy Composites Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Interfacial Adhesion and Mechanical Strength

Abstract: Herein, CNT and GO were used to construct the multiscale-reinforced interphase of the PBO fiber composite for exploring their action in the interfacial adhesion and overall mechanical performance. Compared to the grafting CNT or GO, the cografting of CNT/GO shows better interfacial regulation including increased surface wettability of fiber, enhanced interfacial adhesion, and improved failure resistance of the interfacial region. The interface structure of GO@CNT endows the composites with significantly improv… Show more

“…The measured contact angle was 37.5°, indicating outstanding adhesion and wettability. 64 This attractive feature avoided the formation of cracks and holes, which was conducive to strengthen the interface phase. The interface performance was assessed using the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the CF and EP-IMD in Figure 7b.…”

“…As shown in Figure a, the prepared epoxy thermoset completely wrapped the CF monofilament, and each ball showed a uniform size. The measured contact angle was 37.5°, indicating outstanding adhesion and wettability . This attractive feature avoided the formation of cracks and holes, which was conducive to strengthen the interface phase.…”

“…In summary, the successful grafting of GO onto the CF surface forms a multiscale reinforced body that increases the roughness of CF, resulting in enhanced interfacial adhesion between CF and the matrix. …”

“…In contrast, GO exhibited a strong and sharp (001) peak at 2θ = 11.29° and the layer spacing was 0.78 nm. The layer spacing of GO was larger than that of rGO, and it could be inferred that GO had a larger layer spacing because of the insertion of oxygen-containing groups and GO generated a new crystal structure [ 46 ].…”
