Poly(hydroxyalkanoates): A Fifth Class of Physiologically Important Organic Biopolymers?

Abstract: Along with polyisoprenoids, polypeptides, polysaccharides, and polynucleotides, Nature contains a further group of biopolymers, the poly(hydroxya1kanoates). The commonest member of this group, poly[ (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] P(3-HB), had been identified by Lemoigne as early as the 1920s, as a storage substance in the microorganism Bacillus megaterium made up of more than 12000 (3-HB) units. However, the widespread distribution and significance of these biopolymers has only become clear recently. The work of Reusc… Show more

“…The cassettes were excised with AatI and XhoI and ligated into the same sites of pET-UM4, yielding pET-UM23 (C130A), pET-UM21 (C149A), and pET-UM24 (C292A). 6 and PhaC-His 6 . PhaE and PhaC with (histidine) 6 -tags at their carboxy termini were cloned separately under control of a trc promoter.…”

“…These polymers have attracted significant attention for their potential commercial exploitation as biodegradable plastics (22). The most abundant and best-studied PHA is poly-␤-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), a linear, unbranched homopolymer built up of (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid units.…”
