The increasing demand for using less toxic and dangerous products has fostered the development of nonisocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs). Despite several years of progress within the search for these novel materials, they are still facing difficulties to reach the market. This may be due to the low mechanical properties obtained, which can be explained by the difficult access to high molar masses polymers. The combination of NIPUs with other types of polymers, thus forming polymer-polymer hybrid-NIPUs (so called H-NIPUs) can be an interesting alternative for the valorization of NIPUs though. This review describes the latest advancements in the developments of H-NIPUs, with a specific focus on the combination with epoxy, polyacrylic, and silicium-containing polymers. Finally, the emerging field of combining NIPUs with biopolymers is discussed. A specific focus on the synthetic challenges is provided, as well as their resulting influence onto the final material properties, thus showing how the synergistic combination of NIPUs with other polymers can be a promising pathway toward the formation of novel materials.

Polyurethane (PU) adhesives and coatings are widely used to fabricate high-quality materials due to their excellent properties and their versatile nature, which stems from the wide range of commercially available polyisocyanate and polyol precursors. This polymer family has traditionally been used in a wide range of adhesive applications including the bonding of footwear soles, bonding of wood (flooring) to concrete (subflooring), in the automotive industry for adhering different car parts, and in rotor blades, in which large surfaces are required to be adhered. Moreover, PUs are also frequently applied as coatings/paints for automotive finishes and can be applied over a wide range of substrates such as wood, metal, plastic, and textiles. One of the major drawbacks of this polymer family lies in the use of toxic isocyanate-based starting materials. In the context of the REACH regulation, which places restrictions on the use of substances containing free isocyanates, it is now urgent to find greener routes to PUs. While non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) based on the polyaddition of poly(cyclic carbonate)s to polyamines have emerged in the past decade as greener alternatives to conventional PUs, their industrial implementation is at an early stage of development. In this review article, recent advances in the application of NIPUs in the field of adhesives and coatings are summarized. The article also draws attention to the opportunities and challenges of implementing NIPUs at the industrial scale.

Conventional polyurethanes are typically obtained from polyisocyanates, polyols, and chain extenders. The main starting materials-isocyanates used in this process-raise severe health hazard concerns. Therefore, there is a growing demand for environment-friendly processes and products. This review article summarizes progress that has been made in recent years in the development of alternative methods of polyurethane synthesis. In most of them, carbon dioxide is applied as a sustainable feedstock for polyurethane production directly or indirectly. The resulting nonisocyanate polyurethanes are characterized by a solvent-free synthesis, resistance to chemical degradation, 20% more wear resistance than conventional polyurethane, and can be applied on wet substrates and cured under cold conditions. Three general polymer synthetic methods, step-growth polyaddition, polycondensation, and ring-opening polymerization, are presented in the review. Much attention is given to the most popular and having potential industrial importance method of obtaining non-isocyanate polyurethanes, poly(hydroxy-urethane)s, based upon multicyclic carbonates and aliphatic amines. It is evident from the present review that considerable effort has been made during the last years to develop environmentally friendly methods of obtaining polyurethanes, especially those with the use of carbon dioxide or simple esters of carbonic acid.
