Poly(esterimide) Wire Enamels: Coatings with the Right Combination of Thermal and Mechanical Properties for Many Applications

Abstract: Electrical insulating enamels are usually made of thermosetting resins diluted in suitable solvents, which can be enameled on magnetic wires. PEI‐based enamel is one of the most important insulating enamels in electrical engineering. The characteristics of various PEI based wires are quite different depending on the final use. Using special additives, it is possible to produce optimized PEI versions with improved characteristics. Special applications are possible by introducing pigments or conductive materials… Show more

“…In this article, we investigate the imidization reaction as a function of the primary amine, to target a high content of imide group (higher than 50 mol%) while keeping constant the acid group content (about 10 mol%). The presence of imide group in the polymer structure increases the thermal stability 14. Thus, imidization in the presence of functional primary amines will allow incorporating functional groups onto PMMA.…”

“…[28][29][30] The conductor materials can be coated with a protective layer to avoid material-typical defects, such as abrasion of the metal coating, as well as to protect against environmental influences or short circuits. 31,32 For our tests, bare hybrid conductive yarns were selected because of their good electrical performance.…”

“…The PAI is often utilized for overcoating enamelled wires that already feature a polyesterimide (PEI) basecoat. In fact, the PAI topcoat improves the magnet wire properties by ensuring a better abrasion resistance along with an enhanced temperature resistance [19].…”
