Poly[di-μ3-hydroxymethanesulfinato-zinc(II)]

Abstract: Zinc(II) formaldehyde sulfoxylate, [Zn(CH3O3S)2], a widely marketed additive in the polymer and textile industry (under the registered trademarks Decroline, Decolin and Safolin, CAS 24887‐06‐7), possesses, in the solid state, a polymeric framework, with the Zn atoms octahedrally coordinated by six O atoms of four different hydroxymethanesulfinate groups. The latter are found to coordinate through all their O atoms, including the hydroxy ones, and possess a chelating nature. By contrast, in the structure of… Show more

“…Besides, rongalite is used as an anti‐oxidant in the pharmaceutical formulation, material sciences, and also useful in commercial cosmetic hair‐dye colour removers. Noticeably, zinc complex of rongalite i. e., Zn(HOCH 2 SO 2 ) 2 is marketed under the trademarks decolin, decroline, or safolin, which is used in polymers/textiles as an additive [3] . Although, rongalite is commercially available with low‐cost, nonetheless it can be easily prepared from formaldehyde and sodium dithionite as shown in the scheme 1 [4,5]…”
