Poly(Alkyl Glycidate Carbonate)s as Degradable Pressure‐Sensitive Adhesives

Abstract: Insertion of CO 2 into the polyacrylate backbone, forming poly(carbonate) analogues,p rovides an environmentally friendly and biocompatible alternative.T he synthesis of five poly(carbonate) analogues of poly(methyl acrylate), poly(ethyl acrylate), and poly(butyl acrylate) is described. The polymers are prepared using the salen cobalt(III) complex catalyzedcopolymerization of CO 2 and aderivatized oxirane. All the carbonate analogues possess higher glass-transition temperatures (T g = 32 to À5 8 8C) than alkyl… Show more

“…PPGBC-74 and PPGBC-87, exhibiting low glass transition temperatures (approximately −30 °C), both demonstrate comparably low peel strength of ~0.8 N/cm (Fig. 3a), about twice that of a Post-It® note (~0.4 N/cm) under the same experimental conditions 40 . All the polymer adhesives cohesively fail due to weaker bulk forces than surface bonding forces.…”

“…Noteworthily, these epoxides usually contain additional functional groups, such as alkene, offering enormous opportunities for postpolymerization modification 38 . The functionalized polycarbonates are endowed with tailor‐made properties, including amphiphilicity, 39 self‐healing, 40 biocompatibility, 41 enabling more specialized applications such as drug delivery, 42 adhesives, 43 ion detection, 44 and so forth. Among the bioderived epoxides, the copolymerization of LO and CO 2 has received broader studies including catalyst screening, crystalline behavior of the copolymer, scale‐up synthesis, and material performance tests for both parent and postmodulated polycarbonates 45–49 .…”
