Poly(3-hexyl-thiophene) coil-wrapped single wall carbon nanotube investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Abstract: Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on a (15,0) single wall carbon nanotube partially wrapped by poly(3-hexyl-thiophene). On the bare nanotube section, the local density of states is in good agreement with the theoretical model based on local density approximation and remarkably is not perturbed by the polymer wrapping. On the coiled section, a rectifying current-voltage characteristic has been observed along with the charge transfer from the polymer to the nanotube. The electron transfer from poly(3… Show more

“…In terms of the geometry of rr-P3HT in the presence of SWNTs, previous reports on nanohybrids prepared using techniques similar to that described in this work have indicated experimentally (through scanning probe microscopic techniques) as well as computationally, a natural tendency for the rr-P3HT to wrap around SWNTs due to π-π type super-molecular interactions. 10,[21][22][23][24] To ascertain this fact further and to obtain a better understanding of the non-covalent functionalization process, optical absorption, valence and core level X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were carried out on the rr-P3HT/s-SWNT nanohybrid system. A representative UV-Vis absorbance spectrum for rr-P3HT/s-SWNT nanohybrids in 1,2-dichlorobenzene is shown in Fig.…”

“…The simulations reveal that the 1-dimensional 1D nature of the carbon nanotubes plays an important templating role in the polymer attachment. [37] for further details). The experimental curve, collected on a non-wrapped section of the nanotube is compared with the literature available LDOS theoretical curve [38].…”

“…3 Recently, the extended active surface area, good conductivity, and thermal stability of the CNTs have been exploited by interfacing them with a large variety of entities ranging from inorganic compounds, 4 polymers, 5 and biomolecules. 6 These CNT-based hybrid systems exhibit new functions that originate from the cooperative effect of the distinctive properties of the two materials used, the CNTs and the nano-objects, and have found a broad range of applications.…”

“…6 These CNT-based hybrid systems exhibit new functions that originate from the cooperative effect of the distinctive properties of the two materials used, the CNTs and the nano-objects, and have found a broad range of applications. [4][5][6] In this research field, an interesting class of derivatives can be obtained from the controlled deposition of metal and semiconductive compound nanoparticles (NPs) on the CNTs. 4,7,8 In the case of metal NPs, the reported studies privileged transition metal NPs-CNT composites (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ag, and Au) since the majority of applications are in catalysis and gas sensing.…”
