Pollution Severity Monitoring of High Voltage Transmission Line Insulators Using Wireless Device Based on Leakage Current Bursts

Abstract: The present article describes a smart wireless online device for the severity monitoring of the contaminated insulators of high voltage transmission networks. Accordingly, the wireless developed monitor works by continuously sensing the magnitudes of the leakage current bursts and calculating its average rootmean-square (RMS) value at every second or minute as the monitor software is calibrated. Regarding, if the average of the leakage current RMS value is adjudicated by the monitor as corresponding to a proba… Show more

“…These potential risks would lead to transmission interruption and threaten the security of the power system. Related research [1,2,52] indicates that 81.3% of power accidents in power transmission systems are caused by insulator defects. Additionally, researchers [49,50,53] find that the cyber-attacks and insulation defects classification also play an important role in online monitoring of the Internet of Things architecture in smart grid recently.…”

“…However, manual inspection is time-consuming and resourceintensive. With the widespread application of the Electric Internet of Things, the accuracy and anti-interference capability of online monitoring devices for electrical equipment have been greatly enhanced, allowing for the image and video surveillance monitoring of wildfires [7][8][9]. However, due to the limited number of devices, image and video surveillance can only detect a small number of wildfires [10].…”
