With their unique geographical characteristics, semi-closed narrow bays are important places for human survival but vulnerable to pollution. Because pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs) migrate and undergo transformation through a dynamic mechanism in bays of this type, environmental authorities have formulated a series of effective measures for pollution prevention and control, but these are difficult to realize. Based on monitoring and historical data, a multiphase-coupled hydrodynamic model combined with a carcinogenic risk-assessment model was able to solve the challenging environmental problem. Results showed that the hydrodynamic condition in the semi-closed narrow bay was very complex. A weaker hydrodynamic force had an adverse influence on the diffusion of pollutants, further amplified in part by the head of the semi-closed narrow bay, resulting in a higher ecological risk. The prediction results indicated that the total amount of PAHs transported from seawater to sediments was about 4.7 × 1013 ng/year, which might cause serious threats to aquaculture or human health.

Spatial distribution and ecological risk analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Cilincing waters – Jakarta Bay. Within a few decades, Polycylic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution increases in marine environment in seawater, sediment, and organism. Generally, this pollutant comes from industrial and household waste, agricultural runoff, shipping activities, and input from atmospheric deposition. This study aims to determine the concentration, spasial distribution, source, and ecological risks analysis in Cilincing waters, Jakarta Bay. Samples of seawater, total suspended solid (TSS), and sediment were collected on April 2019 at ten stations. Samples were stored at 4oC afterward analyzed in the laboratory. All samples were then extracted with dichloromethane and n-hexane solvents. They were then fractionated with n-pentane: dichloromethane, and the results were injected into a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) instrument. The highest concentration of PAH compounds in seawater, TSS, and sediment samples are 208.74 ng.L1-; 5.90 ng.L1-; and 63.63 ng.g1- dry weight (dw) respectively. The highest spatial distribution of PAHs in seawater and TSS samples were detected in station 1, 9, and 10, whilst in sediment sample was in station 5 and 6. The ratio of ∑Low Molecular Weight (LMW)/∑High Molecular Weight (HMW), Fluo/(Fluo + Pyr), and An/(An + Phe) revealed that the source of PAH pollution dominated from pyrogenic, especially petroleum combustion from vehicle engine. The total concentration of ∑PAH-9 in sediment was 31.21 ng.g1-dw which was lower than Effects Range Low (ERL), Effects Range Median (ERM), Threshold Effect Levels (TEL), and Probably Effect Levels (PEL) values referred to sediment quality guideline. These results were indicated low potential of causing an adverse biological effect.

Hierarchical Magnetic Films for High-Performance Plasmonic Sensors

Hierarchically structured films comprise a growing section of the field of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).Here, we report a novel, powerfully enhancing hierarchical plasmonic substrate featuring patterned multilayers of magnetic iron oxide nanospheres using an external magnetic field to create sets of radial ridges. This new substrate allows for effective analyte adsorption and significant Raman signal enhancement, thanks to the contribution of both the magnetic and plasmonic components to the electromagnetic hotspots. We demonstrate significant and reliable Raman enhancement for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dilute but persistent environmental pollutants, in a complex and real-world matrix of produced water (PW). The substrate activity for PAHs is validated by gas chromatography−mass spectrometry analysis. An impressive signalto-noise ratio (SNR) of several dB enables detection of the analyte below 1 ppm. This multilayer magnetic film sensor substrate shows remarkable stability and robustness suitable for real-world applications while boasting simple methods and strong potential to scale up fabrication.
