Pollution Indicator of a Megawatt Hour Produced in Cogeneration – The Efficiency of Biogas Purification Process as an Energy Source for Wastewater Treatment Plants

Abstract: The sewage treatment plant, as a producer of renewable energy, should make every effort to ensure that the biogas used as a fuel meets the quality requirements, including those of the manufacturers of cogeneration units. Such measures necessitate the application of a conditioning process of biogas in order to remove harmful compounds, so that its parameters ensure failure-free operation of engines. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of biogas treatment in the A-type installation using th… Show more

“…The LFG cleaning techniques used throughout the world are mainly wet and dry technologies, which effectively reduce contaminants and allow gas engines to operate properly. Dry technology, which is increasingly used in LFG conditioning plants, is the use of activated carbon to remove mainly sulfur and silicon compounds [27,28].…”

“…In the case of LFG generation, the scenario is radically different, as the bioreactor operations are performed by the landfill, and the gas generation is out of control. The capture of biogas is achieved through a degassing system (plant), which is an integral part of the landfill both during its operation and after its reclamation [12,13]. The LFG generated in the landfill constitutes a gaseous fuel and should, therefore, be managed in an optimal way depending on its quality and quantity parameters [14,15].…”

“…Such energy carriers are renewable energy sources, which are defined in the Polish legal system, along with the rules of their operation, by the Act on Renewable Energy Sources [Journal of Laws 2015, item 47820], which implements the European Parliament's Directive on the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources [OJ L 140, 5. 6.2009] into the Polish legal system. The definition of a renewable energy source contained in the aforementioned act is a closed set, starting with wind energy and ending with renewable hydrogen.…”

“…The definition of a renewable energy source contained in the aforementioned act is a closed set, starting with wind energy and ending with renewable hydrogen. Each type of renewable energy requires the use of appropriate equipment to convert one type of energy into another type, mechanical, electrical thermal, cooling [Lewandowski, 2012;Qazi et al, 2019;Ciuła et al, 2023b]. A key element when designing and selecting a site for a renewable energy investment is the type of energy source used.…”
