Pollution effects on fisheries — potential management activities

Abstract: Management of ocean pollution must be based on the best available scientific information, with adequate consideration of economic, social, and political realities. Unfortunately, the best available scientific information about pollution effects on fisheries is often fragmentary, and often conjectural; therefore a primary concern of management should be a critical review and assessment of available factual information about effects of pollutants on fish and shellfish stocks.

“…These responsibilities can be satisfied in many stages, one of them is to conduct critical examinations of pollution effects at levels of the individual, the local population, and the species. However, the stress from chemical pollutants can have significant quantifiable effects on resource species abundance is much more difficult to demonstrate, and has not been documented satisfactorily (Sindermann, 1980). This study is trying to outline the immediate impact on local fisheries of the incident that took place on 21 st April 2015.…”

“…Pollution of water bodies due to chemicals released from industries, discharge of municipal sewage, septage, agricultural runoff containing pesticides, and so forth affect growth of the resource and quality of biomass surviving in that environment. Several investigations were made to study the effect of pollutant on the survival of biological species (Austin, 1999;Davis, Newell, & Quinn, 1999;Dubey & Hussain, 2000;Kime, 1995;Mee & Bloxham, 2002;Mercaldo-Allen, Kuropat, Greig, & Sennefelder, 1994;Shukla, Sharma, Dubey, & Sinha, 2009;Sindermann, 1980). Dubey and Hussain (2006) studied survival of species dependent on a resource in a polluted environment.…”

“…Fish play an important role in the monitoring of aquatic pollution because they respond with great sensitivity to changes in their environment ( Van der Oost et al, 2003). A number of researchers have demonstrated the potential value of various combinations of fish parameters to provide evidence of toxicity or stress responses ranging from condition factor (Dutil and Lambert, 2000), fin-erosion (Sinderman, 1980;Reash and Berra, 1989), retarded fin regeneration (Verma, 2005) and otolith parameters Chukwuka, 2010, 2011) among others.…”
