Pollutant Emissions in Ports: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: In recent decades, maritime transport demand has increased along with world population and global trades. This is associated with higher pollution levels, including the emissions of GHG and other polluting gases. Ports are important elements within maritime transport and contribute themselves to pollutant emissions. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive yet technical review of the latest related technologies, explaining and covering aspects that link ports with emissions, i.e., analyzing, monitoring, assess… Show more

“…In recent years, due to the rapid growth of urban populations, along with the rapid development of coastal and harbor industries and coastal mariculture, the loading of pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand (COD) into the sea has increased continuously, and marine ecological disasters, such as red tides, have occasionally occurred. In view of the important role played by coastal zones in the world's social and economic development, especially with their rapid social and economic development, the globalization of marine ecological environment problems in offshore waters has gradually become prominent, and countries that depend on their coastlines have carried out studies on the marine environmental capacities of pollutants [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. A specific method to study the environmental capacity of Kastela Bay in Yugoslavia has been proposed [11].…”

“…Roles played by ports are important to the transition of the maritime sector towards sustainability [15]. Sustainable ports focusing on the social, economic and environmental impacts, attempt to mitigate the above effects and also their carbon footprints by adopting policies to comply with national and international regulations [16]. Practices in making green ports involve several dimensions or subindices like environmental, technologies, monitoring and upgrading, process and quality improvement, active participation, communication and cooperation along with port management tools, monitoring, etc.…”
