Pollination of Grewia asiatica (Malvaceae) by Megachile cephalotes (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae): Male vs. Female Pollination

Abstract: Phalsa, Grewia asiatica is a multi-purpose crop while cross-pollination can significantly improve its reproductive success. Megachile bees (Megachilidae) are the most important group of pollinators of G. asiatica. In this study we observed the foraging behavior of Megachile cephalotes and its ultimate impact on reproductive success of phalsa at Bahawalpur (Punjab), Pakistan. Although visitation rate and stay time were statistically similar in both the sexes but visitation frequency (2.06±0.14 individuals/120 s… Show more

“…Megachile rotundata and N. melanderi are the intensively managed bees on commercial level for lucerne crop [20]. Moreover, from South Punjab region, the effectiveness of other solitary bees in terms of single-visit seed/fruit set have been reported for other crops, i.e., canola [58], bitter gourd [56], pumpkin [61], luffa gourd [62] and falsa [79].…”

“…Insect foraging behavior of abundant pollinators of litchi were assessed in term of number of flowers visited by an insect in one minute (visitation rate) and time spent by an insect pollinator on one flower (visit duration) by using a stopwatch along with recording of relative humidity and temperature during each census (Sajjad et al, 2019).…”

“…Three observers recorded that data with net observation time of 60 hours i.e., 20 hours each for behavior. For recording the foraging behaviors, a stopwatch was used (Akram et al, 2019) and visits were considered only when the bees made contact with the reproductive parts of the flowers.…”
