Pollination ecology of Citrullus lanatus at Yatta, Kenya

Abstract: Pollination ecology was investigated in Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai, which is a species vulnerable to pollinator loss. It was found that this species depends heavily on the honeybee, Apis mellifera L., as the main pollinator. Other pollen vectors identified include Xylocopa bees, halictid bees, Hypotrigona bees, flies and beetles. Phenologically, the plant was found to promote male fitness by producing numerous male flowers, which serve as pollinator attracting structures. Blooming sequence and … Show more

“…The flowers were marked one day before the evaluation of these parameters. The anther dehiscence period was measured with methodologies previously described (Njoroge et al, 2004). The stigmatic receptivity of hermaphrodite flowers in all cultivars was determined with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) following the methodology described by Dafni et al (2005).…”

“…The Park covers an area of 21 km 2 and was gazetted in 1967. The climatic conditions show variations in rainfall of between 760 and 1015 mm per annum with temperature ranges of 24-26 • C (Njoroge et al 2004). Four vegetation types comprising bushlands, closed canopy forests, open grasslands and herbaceous vegetation characterise the Park (Njoroge et al 2004).…”

“…No Kenya, estudos realizados com a melancieira indicaram que as abelhas Apis mellifera visitaram em maior número as flores masculinas, porém permaneceram mais tempo nas flores femininas, o que pode ser benéfico para a polinização, uma vez que, quando as abelhas visitam as flores femininas já estão com bastante pólen no corpo, o que garante uma polinização efetiva (NJOROGE, 2004).…”
