Wave climate is shifting over the last decades along the Atlantic coasts of Europe ultimately driven by large-scale patterns of atmospheric variability forced by anthropogenic global warming. Changes in wave height and surf zone orbital currents are hypothesized to drive marked shifts in the shape of intertidal organisms such as the stalked barnacle Pollicipes pollicipes, whose quality and market price are known to decrease non linearly with the peduncle length: width ratio S. This study evaluates wave trends in NW Iberian Peninsula, using the Spanish Port System 2006–2020 SIMAR wave hindcast. On the other hand, trends in stalked barnacle morphology and quality are estimated from 26 sites at the management regions of Baiona and A Guarda between 2011 and 2020. Results show evidence of temporal changes in barnacle quality and, especially, morphometry caused by simultaneous shifts in winter wave induced orbital currents. Because of the non linear relationship between S and the high quality threshold, large increases in S are usually translated to small reductions in quality. However, we identified a tipping point around S = 2.4 that if surpassed can lead to great drops in barnacle quality. In addition, changes in wave forcing will have different effects at each extraction site, as trends in wave climate are decoupled from barnacle morphometry at steeper sites sheltered from the predominant wave direction. In conclusion, this knowledge could be applied to develop site specific barnacle harvesting strategies based on annual wave climate forecasts. Graphical abstract

Summary:Understanding and predicting patterns of distribution and abundance of marine resources is important for conservation and management purposes in small-scale artisanal fisheries and industrial fisheries worldwide. The goose barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes) is an important shellfish resource and its distribution is closely related to wave exposure at different spatial scales. We modelled the abundance (percent coverage) of P. pollicipes as a function of a simple wave exposure index based on fetch estimates from digitized coastlines at different spatial scales. The model accounted for 47.5% of the explained deviance and indicated that barnacle abundance increases non-linearly with wave exposure at both the smallest (metres) and largest (kilometres) spatial scales considered in this study. Distribution maps were predicted for the study region in SW Portugal. Our study suggests that the relationship between fetch-based exposure indices and P. pollicipes percent cover may be used as a simple tool for providing stakeholders with information on barnacle distribution patterns. Modelamos la abundancia (porcentaje de cobertura) de P. pollicipes en función de un simple índice de exposición al oleaje basado en estimaciones de fetch a partir de líneas de costa digitalizadas a diferentes escalas espaciales. El modelo explicó el 47.5 % de la varianza total; de acuerdo con el modelo, la abundancia de percebes aumenta de forma no lineal con la exposición al oleaje a escalas espaciales pequeñas (metros) y grandes (kiló-metros). Summary:This study describes the use of calcein as a chemical tagging methodology to estimate growth rate variation of the stalked barnacle Pollicipes pollicipes, an ecologically important intertidal species and economic resource, in SW Portugal. Calcein tagging had a high success rate (94%) in marking both juvenile and adult barnacles for a period of 2.5 months, providing a valuable method for obtaining reliable data in growth studies of P. pollicipes. Growth rate decreased with barnacle size and was highly variable amongst individuals, particularly in smaller barnacles. No effect of shore level on barnacle growth was detected. Growth rates were higher in smaller juvenile barnacles, peaking at a 1.1-mm monthly increment in rostro-carinal length (RC) for individuals with RC=5 mm, and decreased with barnacle size (monthly growth rates of 0.5 mm for adult barnacles with RC~12.5 mm). Growth rates observed in adults with commercial interest (RC≥18 mm) was <0.25 mm per month. The advantages of tagging P. pollicipes with calcein were the possibility of mass marking individual barnacles of different size cohorts within a short period (less than 1 day of manipulation); and reduced time of fieldwork, which is very important because this species inhabits very exposed rocky shores.Keywords: stalked barnacle; Pollicipes; growth rate; calcein; tagging; intertidal; Portugal.Variación de la tasa de crecimiento del percebe Pollicipes pollicipes (Crustacea: Cirripedia) utilizando calceína como marcador químico Resumen: Este estudio describe el uso de calceína como marcador químico para estimar la variación de la tasa de crecimiento del percebe Pollicipes pollicipes, una especie ecológicamente importante del intermareal rocoso y un importante recurso económico en la Península Ibérica. El uso de calceína tuvo una alta tasa de éxito (94%) para el marcaje de juveniles y adultos durante un período de 2.5 meses, proporcionando un método valioso para obtener datos fiables. La tasa de crecimiento disminuyó con el tamaño y fue muy variable entre individuos, principalmente en los percebes más pequeños. No se detectó ningún efecto del nivel intermareal en el crecimiento de percebes. Las tasas de crecimiento fueron más altas en los percebes juveniles más pequeños, alcanzando un máximo de 1.1 mm de incremento mensual de longitud rostro-carenal (RC) para individuos con RC=5 mm, y disminuyeron con el tamaño del percebe (tasas de crecimiento mensual de 0.5 mm para percebes adultos con RC~12.5 mm).
