“…Studies from Central India have depicted the succession of tropical deciduous 'Sal' forests and concurrent climate oscillations since the Early Holocene . In addition, the investigations of some shallow lake deposits have also documented short-term climatic variability during the Late Holocene (Chauhan, 2005;Chauhan and Quamar, 2012). Similar attempts from northeast India (Dixit and Bera, 2011) and the Eastern Ghats (Anupama et al, 2014) have elucidated the succession of tropical forests in these regions and the climatic oscillations during the Holocene.…”

“…However, the earliest evidence of formation of Sal-dominated forest has been recorded around 2800 cal years BP at Padauna 17 Swamp located about 20 km east of the present site, probably due to setting of the required climatic condition in this region about 600 years earlier. It is noticeable that northeastern MP, the modern Sal-dominated tropical deciduous forests, were established around 1600 cal years BP at Jarbokho 15 and around 1100 cal years BP at Jagmotha in Sidhi district in northern MP 12 , i.e. about 600 and 1100 years later respectively, compared to the present study site.…”

“…However, central India with diversified tropical deciduous forests, constituting about 28% forest cover of the country, has not yet been given much attention in order to reconstruct their antiquity, temporal and spatial distribution as well as climatic variability they have witnessed during the Quaternary. Some sketchy information is available from eastern Madhya Pradesh (MP) [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] on this aspect during the Holocene on broader and shorter timescales through pollen analytical studies of lake and swamp deposits. Besides, some pollen-based studies have also been executed from central 19 and southwestern MP 20,21 deciphering the changing vegetation scenarios in these regions since the MidHolocene.…”

“…Several studies have employed pollen, particle size and magnetic susceptibility of lake sediments to decipher the past climate (Peck et al 2004;Chen et al 2004;Peng et al 2005). A fair number of palynological studies have been carried out from several sites in India viz., northeastern part (Chauhan 1995(Chauhan , 2000(Chauhan , 2004(Chauhan , 2005Yadav et al 2006), southeastern part (Chauhan 2002;Chauhan and Quamar 2010), central part (Shaw et al 2007), east coast (Bhattacharyya et al 2013;Barui 2011;Halit and Behling 2008;Khandelwal et al 2006;Farooqui and Vaz 2000), and southwest coast (Kumaran et al 2005). The pollen sequences from the respective sites have also offered insights into the changing floristic patterns and the coeval climatic episodes.…”
