Paleoecological analysis of three lake sediment cores from the Roraima savannas in northern Brazil revealed systems dominated by Poaceae pollen throughout most of the Holocene. A slight increase of palms and woody taxa, probably linked to wetter conditions, is observed during the last 1000 years but is more noticeable after 300 and 150 calibrated years BP (yr BP) respectively. Charcoal was present throughout affirming the importance of fire for the landscape but showed the highest values mostly in the last millenium. Poaceae pollen size spectra varied considerably, showing more variability than the overall pollen record. Despite evidence of some climate change in the Holocene, these savannas were stable systems. The sedimentary records showed gaps in deposition between 10,000 and 7800 yr BP and between 2500 and 1200 yr BP, suggesting dry periods during which lakes most likely dried out or became impermanent and highlighting the sensitivity of these lakes to local water table variation. The establishment of the modern climate in the region is evident after 1000 yr BP.

Miocene Palynology of the Solimões Formation (Well 1-AS-105-AM), Western Brazilian Amazonia

During the Miocene, Andean tectonism caused the development of a vast wetland across western Amazonia. Palynological studies have been the main source of chronological and paleobotanical information for this region, including several boreholes in the Solimões Formation in western Brazilian Amazonia. Here, a palynological study of well core 1-AS-105-AM drilled in Tabatinga (Amazonas, Brazil) is presented: 91 new taxa are erected (25 spores and 66 pollen, including one new genus), 16 new combinations are proposed, and a list of botanical/ecological affinities is updated. We recorded 23,880 palynomorphs distributed in 401 different types. Among pollen and spores, 62 extant families and 99 extant genera were identified, which accounts for 39% and 30% of known botanical affinities to the family and genus level, respectively. Individual samples have pollen/spore counts with approximately 25% to 95% of known affinities to the family level. Pollen associations are sourced primarily from the wetland environments and to a minor extent from nonflooded forests. Palynological diversity analyses indicate an increase from the early to the middle/early late Miocene in core 1-AS-105-AM. Probable scenarios to explain this diversity increase include a higher degree of environmental complexity from the middle Miocene onwards, that is, a more heterogeneous riverscape, including broader extensions of nonflooded forests, as opposed to the swamp-dominated early Miocene. Additionally, the positive effects of the Miocene Climatic Optimum on plant richness could explain the increase in pollen richness. We posit hypotheses of forest diversification that can be tested as more botanical affinities are established along with a longer Miocene record.

Estudos paleopalinológicos baseiam-se na identificação de grãos de pólen e esporos fósseis a partir da comparação com tipos modernos. Esta pesquisa objetivou desenvolver um atlas palinológico atual da flora nativa localizada na bacia de Colônia. Para a construção da listagem de espécies foram utilizados taxa encontrados na literatura botânica do local. Com base na lista, foram coletadas no Herbário UEC/Unicamp. O material foi processado utilizando a técnica de acetólise. Neste artigo são descritas 77 espécies, pertencentes a 44 famílias de angiospermas que representam a maioria das famílias presentes na Bacia de Colônia. Os grãos de pólen foram caracterizados considerando aspectos morfológicos e registro fotográfico no eixo polar e equatorial, conjuntamente com os aspectos ecológicos da espécie. O presente atlas fornecerá auxílio na identificação de taxa de pólen fóssil observados nos registros palinológicos do Quaternário que se encontram em andamento na Bacia de Colônia.
