Pollen limitation and resource limitation affect the reproductive success of Medicago sativa L.

Abstract: BackgroundA large proportion of the flowers and ovules of plants do not develop into fruits and seeds. Plant reproduction may be limited because of pollen limitation and resource limitation. Medicago sativa L. is an ecologically important species in northwest China. We conducted a pollen supplementation experiment to determine the degree of pollen limitation in this species and detect the possible effects of resource allocation on pollen supplementation. We crossed two factors, pollen level (natural condition … Show more

“…is due to its buzz pollination character, production of several generations in a year, high abundance and foraging time synchrony with lucerne blooming [25]. Tripping varied with time of day; our results are are in line with the previous studies illustrating that visits of bees peaked from 10:00 am to 14:00 pm, and this period coincided with the complete release of the pollen [32]. Moreover, all the pollinators were at their peak abundance at 11:00 am to 14:00 pm during both years.…”

“…However, honeybees cannot pollinate lucerne flowers effectively [27,28]. This inefficiency of honeybees in lucerne pollination is because of some adaptive behavioral characters, its side feeding habit for only nectar foraging and lucerne pollen lacking the essential amino acid, isoleucine [29][30][31][32][33].…”
