Pollen Germination and Pollen Tube Growth in Gymnosperms

Abstract: Pollen germination and pollen tube growth are common to all seed plants, but these processes first developed in gymnosperms and still serve for their successful sexual reproduction. The main body of data on the reproductive physiology, however, was obtained on flowering plants, and one should be careful to extrapolate the discovered patterns to gymnosperms. In recent years, physiological studies of coniferous pollen have been increasing, and both the features of this group and the similarities with flowering p… Show more

“…During pollen germination in all three parts of the stigma, style and ovary callus appear, and a callus prevents the pollen tube from germinating and elongating correctly, resulting in non-affinity (Estaji et al 2016, Breygina, Klimenko and Schekaleva 2021, Zheng et al 2018). In the present experiment, heterogamous pollination combinations of both morphs were affinity.…”

“…Pollen can aggregate on the germination medium, making counting germinated and non-germinated pollen grains difficult. Pollen tubes can form a net and have many air sacs which help them float [ 32 , 33 ], so they can aggregate at the top and center of the germination medium drop, while ungerminated pollen sinks. Since this can form a germination gradient in the drop, it is important to be consistent in the regions of the drop that are counted to calculate pollen germination.…”
