Valencian citriculture is oriented towards fresh production, which requires fruits with few seeds or seedless fruits. Consequently, parthenocarpic and self-incompatible varieties are mainly cultivated. However, some mandarin varieties, under favorable circumstances, induce seed formation in other mandarins by cross-pollination. This phenomenon depends on the germination capacity of the pollen of the pollinating variety, the number of ovules of the pollinated variety, the distance between them, and the abundance of pollinating insects. Previous studies in Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA) have determined the ability to pollinate and be pollinated by all commercial varieties in Europe. Moreover, the Regional Government, Generalitat Valenciana, has georeferenced information on the cultivated varieties. We present two geostatistical models to estimate the risk of plots to be pollinated, depending on the varieties present in their environment, the number of plants, and their distance. Models are used to generate local and regional cross-pollination risk maps. Moreover, the robustness of these models to changes in the values assigned to their main parameters is assessed using different similarity calculations.

Pollen exposure in occupational settings involves different categories of workers. In this paper the effects of diurnal pollen variations have been evaluated in two sites characterized by different vegetation and urbanization: the suburban site of Tor Vergata (TV) and the rural site of Monte Porzio Catone (MPC). Aerobiological and meteorological monitoring was performed in the two sites during the winter of 2017. The data analysis focuses on the comparison between pollen concentrations observed in relation to meteorological variables. In general, it can be stated that the indoor and outdoor dynamics for MPC and TV are different, with the outdoor concentration of pollen for MPC always higher than for TV, in accordance with significant presence of vegetation. The high nocturnal peaks detected in MPC and completely absent in TV could be caused by the presence of particular conditions of stagnation combined with greater emissions from the pollen sources. Furthermore the higher I/O ratio observed during the working hours in TV compared to MPC could be ascribed to the workers’ behavior. Exposure to pollen can be responsible for several health effects and the knowledge of its level can be useful to improve the evaluation and management of this biological risk.

Children exposed to various indoor and outdoor allergens are placed at an increased risk of developing asthma in later life, with sensitization in these individuals being a strong predictor of disease morbidity. In addition, aeroallergen exposure influences asthma outcomes through an interplay with adverse determinants of health. The goal of this review is to provide an introductory overview of factors related to aeroallergen exposure in type 2-high childhood asthma. These include the relevance of exposure in asthma exacerbations and severity, and the evidence-base for avoidance and treatment for sensitization to these allergens. This review will focus on both indoor aeroallergens (house dust mite, pet, cockroach, mold, and rodent) and outdoor aeroallergens (pollens and molds). Treatment of aeroallergen sensitization in children with asthma includes avoidance and removal measures, although there is limited evidence of clinical benefit especially with single-strategy approaches. We will also address the interplay of aeroallergens and climate change, adverse social determinants, and the current COVID-19 pandemic, when we have seen a dramatic reduction in asthma exacerbations and emergency department visits among children. While there are many factors that are hypothesized to contribute to this reduction, among them is a reduced exposure to outdoor seasonal aeroallergens.
