Pollen-based reconstruction of Holocene vegetation and climate in southern Italy: the case of Lago Trifoglietti

Abstract: Abstract.A high-resolution pollen record from Lago Trifoglietti in Calabria (southern Italy) provides new insights into the paleoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic changes which characterise the Holocene period in the southern Italy. The chronology is based on 11 AMS radiocarbon dates from terrestrial organic material. The Holocene history of the vegetation cover shows the persistence of an important and relatively stable Fagus forest present over that entire period, offering a rare example of a beech woodstand … Show more

“…2). Relatively arid conditions in the Mediterranean region during the late Holocene are also reported from other records, including Lake Prespa (Schilman et al, 2001;Roberts et al, 2008 and references therein;Joannin et al, 2012;Leng et al, 2012;Siani et al, 2012). A lower lake level at Lake Dojran could have resulted in a relative enlargement of shallow lake areas covered by reed beds.…”

“…6000 and 4300 cal yr BP correlates with a minimum in K and Fe and suggests slightly increased productivity, slightly reduced lake level and lower supply of clastic material. This is likely correlated to warmer temperatures and more arid conditions during the mid-Holocene, such as observed in other paleoclimate records in the Mediterranean region (e.g., Wick et al, 2003;Kotthoff et al, 2008a,b;Roberts et al, 2008;Wagner et al, 2009;Leng et al, 2010;Vogel et al, 2010a;Aufgebauer et al, 2012;Joannin et al, 2012). The shift from more humid to more arid conditions at Lake Dojran was only moderate, as OM, TS, TOC/TS, TOC/TN, δ 13 C org , and δ 18 O carb in core Co1260 are relatively stable between 7900 and 4300 cal yr BP.…”

“…Climate at nearby Fagnano Castello (Cosenza province) has a mean annual temperature of 15 • C, (24 • C for August and 7.5 • C for January). Despite the strictly Mediterranean latitude of the studied area, annual precipitation (including cloudiness) is high (1849 mm yr −1 ), though a relatively short dry period does occur in the summer season (Joannin et al, 2012). Forest surrounding Lake Trifoglietti is dominated by Fagus with some Pinus nigra subsp.…”

“…A core transect was carried out from the northeastern shore of the lake and pollen data were extracted from overlapping cores (Joannin et al, 2012). The chronology, based on 11 14 C dates, spans the last 11 500 yr with a mean temporal resolution of 68 yr / sample (Table 1).…”
