Pollakiuria and Stranguria in a Labrador Retriever with Penile HSA

Abstract: An approximately 8 yr old castrated male Labrador retriever presented for evaluation of weight loss, stranguria, and pollakiuria. Lysis of the proximal one-third of the os penis was diagnosed on abdominal radiographs, and a positive contrast urethrography revealed a smoothly marginated filling defect along the dorsal aspect of the urethra at the level of the radiographically observed osteolysis. Regional ultrasound revealed an echogenic mass at the proximal aspect of the os penis with a severely irregular and … Show more

“…In particular, lysis of the proximal one-third of the os penis was diagnosed on abdominal radiographs, while a positive contrast urethrography revealed a smoothly marginated filling defect along the dorsal aspect of the urethra at the level of the radiographically observed osteolysis. Ultrasound examination revealed an echogenic mass with a severely irregular and discontinuous periosteal surface of the os penis [ 51 ]. Penile ultrasound including colour or pulse-wave Doppler and grey-scale analysis is a valuable diagnostic tool in human medicine.…”

“…One of those had macroscopic haematuria, 10 the other one only microscopic haematuria 12 and the third case had only occasional red blood cells reported on the urine analysis. 11 Therefore, the decision was taken to proceed with the final surgery, as recommended by Boothe et al and to achieve a final diagnosis. FNA and biopsy were deemed to be of too high risk for bleeding and with a high likelihood of being non-diagnostic.…”

“…10 The second patient with a haemangiosarcoma of the os penis developed lung metastasis at Day 193 after penile amputation and was then humanely euthanased on Day 236 due to decrease in quality of life. 11 Of the two patients reported with an osteosarcoma in the os penis, one developed recurrence at 8 weeks after surgery, 5 and the other one survived 12 months without adjuvant treatment, but was then humanely euthanased due to metastatic disease. 7 The dog with the multilobular osteochondrosarcoma had the longest survival time with 22 months, but had confirmed recurrence twice during that period.…”

“…El HSA representa el 69% de los tumores cardiacos y se presenta principalmente en perros de edad avanzada (8-13 años). Entre las razas más predispuestas se encuentran el Pastor Alemán, Golden Retriever y Labrador Retriever; sin embargo, puede presentarse en cualquier grupo racial (Fry et al, 2014).…”
