Across the globe, governments restricted social life to slow the spread of COVID-19. Several conservative Protestant sects resisted these policies in the United States. We do not yet know if theology shaped the resistance or if it was more a product of a polarized national political context. We argue that the country context likely shapes how conservative Protestants’ moral worldview affects their perceptions of the pandemic and government restrictions. Countries implementing more regulations, those with limited access to healthcare, food, and other essential services, and those with past histories of epidemics may all shape residents’ perceptions. Drawing on the case of American Amish and Mennonite missionaries stationed abroad, we content-analyzed accounts of the pandemic from an international Amish and Mennonite correspondence newspaper. We found that the missionaries’ perceptions of the pandemic and governmental restrictions differ from those of their U.S. counterparts, which suggests that context likely shapes how religious moral worldviews express themselves concerning public health interventions.

Exceptional times call for exceptional measures—this formula is all too familiar in the domestic setting. Governments have often played loose with their state's constitution in the name of warding off an urgent threat. But after decades of increasing interconnectedness and emerging transnational governance, today one sees new forms of emergency politics that are cross-border in range. From the European Union to the World Health Organization, from supranational institutions to state governments acting in concert, the logic of emergency is embraced in international contexts, with Covid-19 the latest occasion. This Forum offers an entry-point into this emerging phenomenon. Taking as its point of departure two recent books, it examines the origins, forms, effects and normative stakes of emergency politics beyond the state. Among the matters discussed are the concept of emergency politics, the historical context of its contemporary forms, the patterns of decision-making associated with it, the implications for the legitimacy of transnational institutions, and the constitutional and political ways in which it might be contained. Transnational emergency politics seems likely to remain a central feature of the coming years, and our aim is to further its study in international relations.

“…1 Trotz der zunehmenden Thematisierung der Auswirkungen auf Frauen im Bezug auf die Corona-Krise fehlt eine geschlechtsspezifische Analyse in der Untersuchung der aktuell in Deutschland, in der Schweiz und in Österreich stattfindenden Corona-Proteste. Wenngleich bislang keine empirische Einzel-Untersuchung zu den Frauen, die an den Corona-Protesten in den deutschsprachigen Ländern teilnehmen, vorhanden ist, so lässt sich zumindest aus den Studien von Nachtwey et al (2020) und Koos (2021) Folgendes gewinnen: Bei den protestierenden Frauen handelt es sich vornehmlich um bürgerliche Frauen mit höherem Bildungsabschluss und deutscher respektive österreichischer oder schweizerischer Staatsbürgerschaft, die gegenüber -1 Die aufgelisteten Momente sind nicht die einzigen Gefährdungen für Frauen unter Coronabedingungen. Zu ihnen gehören auch die steigende Gewalt gegen Frauen unter Ausgangsbeschränkungen (Steinert/Ebert 2020) oder die massiven esoterischem Denken offen sind, die Impfthematik als relevant ausweisen und ihre Sorge um Kinder ausdrücken.…”

Our article proposes a theoretical interpretation of women‘s broad participation in the coronavirus protests. For this purpose, we consider two central themes of their protest: vaccination and caring for their loved ones. From a sociological perspective, we show how their protest affirms the gendered division between the private and the public spheres that is constitutive of bourgeois capitalist society, and what role romantic thought plays in this. The women accept the social role assigned to them as caring women and creatures of nature. From a philosophical perspective, we illuminate how this affirmation is accompanied by a threat to society. That threat is based, as we point out with Hegel, on a contradiction of woman and society. Their protest reveals paradigmatically the dialectical movement of affirmation and endangerment of the bourgeois capitalist order.
