This article analyses two case studies from the Israeli education system that demonstrate how religious themes and language are used in service of populist politics. First, 'Being Citizens in Israel' is the standard high school civics textbook that underwent a major revision in 2015. The second case study focuses on new school programmes that focus on the rebuilding of the Third Jewish temple, and the inclusion of references to the Third Temple in other school subject curricula. Both cases were analysed using Brubaker's terminology, specifically highlighting elements of majoritarinism, anti-institutionalism and protectionism that are especially relevant to the Israeli case. The majoritarian and protectionist elements are dominant within these cases, and convey a set of transcendental ideals in the name of an imagined collectivity that is conceived as superior, sacred, pure, with a historic mission in a manner that antagonises minorities, liberal sensibilities and democratic principles. The anti-institutionalism element is not explicitly present, yet an implicit contextual presence is discussed.

This introduction offers an overview of the concept of populism, the debates around its definitions and its relationship with democracy and the significance of attending to populist politics in the context of education. It also lays out the political contexts in which authors have engaged with education and populist politics in the UK, Brazil and Israel, and the ways in which they understand populist shifts in education. Detailing the two main conceptions of populism used by authors in the special section, namely, populism as ideology and populism as political logic, we discuss how authors understand the construction of 'the people' and 'the elite', and the implications of the 'antagonism' between them in each case. Dividing the nine articles in the special section into three groups, we look at the ways in which right-wing populism has sought to (re)shape divisions based on race, religion and nationalities, among other things; how political and pedagogic practices are being (re)imagined to counter these divisions and populist moves; and the stakes of bringing the question of populism into education. We show how this special section has brought together different conversations and disciplinary perspectives on right-wing shifts in education, challenges to these and a potential way forward. Most importantly, we invite readers to think through the shifting role of education in democracy, as well as the divisions and hierarchies that are entailed in institutionalised education.

El presente trabajo reporta los resultados de un análisis de contenido cualitativo realizado a una muestra de 11.576 tweets de simpatizantes ciudadanos de los partidos y candidatos de oposición durante el período electoral de 2017, partiendo de la discusión de candidatos a la gubernatura de Coahuila. El objetivo de dicho análisis fue identificar los mecanismos de otrificación empleados para la construcción de opositores binarios a la propia identidad política entre los ciudadanos, a la luz del recrudecimiento y polarización de las divisiones ideológicas en la esfera pública nacional e internacional, tanto en línea como en el espacio físico. El estudio encontró que los simpatizantes de izquierda tienden a deshumanizar a aquellos que enuncian opiniones diferentes, caracterizándolos como conspiradores en plurales arbitrarios como «la Mafia del Poder», y que los simpatizantes de derecha hacen extenso uso del desdén como mecanismo de otrificación. Se concluye que ambas prácticas son contraproducentes y altamente dañinas para la construcción de diálogo ciudadano y de la esfera pública del país, y que contribuyen a una concepción de los procesos democráticos, no como una búsqueda del mejor sistema de gobierno para el bien común, sino como un juego de suma cero en el cual no hay nada más importante que la derrota del bando opuesto.
