Political psychophysiology

Abstract: The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the number of studies employing psychophysiological methods to explain variation in political attitudes and behavior. However, the collection, analysis, and interpretation of physiological data present novel challenges for political scientists unfamiliar with the underlying biological concepts and technical skills necessary for utilizing this approach. Our objective in this article is to maximize the effectiveness of future work utilizing psychophysiological measure… Show more

“… 3 I measure EDA using skin conductance level (SCL) to determine the skin conductance response (SCR), both measured in microsiemens (µS). For more information on SCL, SCR, and EDA measurement, see Braithwaite et al (2013) and Settle et al (2020). …”

“…Physiological data are challenging to collect, and sometimes sensors do not have a clear enough connection to reliably receive a signal from the participant (Potter & Bolls, 2012;Settle et al, 2020). Therefore, it was necessary to code the skin conductance signals for quality, which we did following the method employed by Soroka, Fournier, Nir, and Hibbing (2019).…”

“…But that should not lead us to disregard the method all together. Skin conductance has been a well-validated measure of the activation of arousal (Settle et al, 2020). Using skin conductance as an indicator of arousal to politically relevant stimuli (political parties, politicians, the news, campaign ads, etc.…”
