Political Obligations

Abstract: Provides a full defence of a theory of political obligation on the basis of the principle of fairness (or fair play). The book responds to the most important objections and extends a theory-based on fairness into a developed ‘multiple principle’ theory of obligation. The ‘self-image of the state’ in regard to political obligations is explored through examination of judicial decisions in three different democratic countries, while the book also breaks new ground by studying attitudes towards political obligatio… Show more

“…4 See Beran (1987) for a helpful discussion of the limitations of actual consent as a theory of political obligation. 5 For a 'samaritan' account of political obligation as a response to dire need see Wellman (1996;2005). 6 As Dudley Knowles (2010, p.19) points out, coercion is, after all, the 'nasty face of the state'.…”

“…I do not owe it to any particular individual to make some charitable contribution but it is plausibly a duty nonetheless. 15 For problems with actual consent theories of political obligation see Simmons (1979), Beran (1987), Klosko (2005), and Knowles (2010). 16 The term 'practical identity' is borrowed from Korsgaard (1996).…”

“…George Klosko has suggested that when agents can demonstrate that they can attain benefits in alternative ways to public provision, they are under no obligation to continue contributing to that public provision. 44 We would not think that an individual has violated any obligation if he or she refuses to participate in a communal project to bring clean water to his or her neighbourhood if he or she prefers to dig a well for himself or herself, for example. 45 It is perhaps this thought that motivates Klosko when he denies that obligations based on reciprocity can extend across borders, on the basis that 'while the public goods noted in regard to the intrastate realm are necessary for acceptable lives, such interstate public goods are not similarly necessary'.…”
