Political Ideology, Trust, and Cooperation

Abstract: Theories suggest that political ideology relates to cooperation, with conservatives being more likely to pursue selfish outcomes, and liberals more likely to pursue egalitarian outcomes. In study 1, we examine how political ideology and political party affiliation (Republican vs. Democrat) predict cooperation with a partner who self-identifies as Republican or Democrat in two samples before (n = 362) and after (n = 366) the 2012 US presidential election. Liberals show slightly more concern for their partners’ … Show more

“…Our results show that belief in anthropogenic climate change and its negative impacts on people across the world is more strongly related to worry for left-leaning individuals than for right-leaning individuals. The differences are in line with motivated reasoning, and are plausible when considering typical interests, values, and worldviews within left-leaning versus right-leaning political orientation (Jost et al, 2003;Jost et al, 2009;Balliet et al, 2018). For example, asking specifically for possible worldwide consequences of climate change could prime egalitarian values often related to the political left, as opposed to the more individualistic values found on the political right.…”

“…Our prediction of a positive association of SDO with economic protectionism was based on the rationale that the principle of free trade rests on the idea of maximizing the joint benefits of all parties involved. As indicated by empirical evidence on interpersonal interactions in interdependent situations (Balliet et al, 2018;Chirumbolo et al, 2016), this is not a prominent goal of individuals high in SDO in interdependent situations. Instead, we expected individuals high in SDO to adopt a more pragmatic approach of supporting protectionist measures when necessary for the sake of national interests but, at times, also supporting free trade for the same reason.…”

“…The perception of international trade as a zero-sum game in which one nation wins at the expense of another nation is contrary to the core argument in favor of free trade, which refers to mutual benefits to all parties involved. Empirical evidence shows that on an interindividual level SDO is negatively related to the cooperative strategy of aiming for the maximization of joint benefits in interdependent situations and positively related to the adoption of competitive or individualistic strategies (Balliet, Tybur, Wu, Antonellis, & Van Lange, 2018;Chirumbolo, Leone, & Desimoni, 2016). Hence, individuals high in SDO should favor a strategy that involves shielding one's own economy from harmful foreign competition as well as engaging in specific bilateral trade agreements that are beneficial to the own economy rather than subscribing to the general principle of free international trade.…”

“…Mengenai hubungan identitas nasional terhadap relasi interpersonal sudah pernah dilakukan penelitian sebelumnya. Buchan, Brewer, Grimalda, Wilson, dan Foddy (2016) Balliet et al,(2016) menunjukan bahwa ideologi politik berhubungan dengan relasi kooperatif. Individu dengan ideologi liberal lebih menunjukan perilaku kooperatif dibanding individu dengan ideologi konservatif.…”
