“…It takes a further three decades for rural indigenous women to narrow the gap with their urban and nonindigenous counterparts. The belated catch‐up of rural indigenous women may be related to the accumulated effects of relative improved living standards associated with steady economic development and universal and redistributive social policies during the “Well‐being State” (Torres & Rojas, 2015). Nevertheless, the persistence of noticeable differences between rural and urban populations even during this “golden period” may be taken as further testament to the chronic effect of the endemic inequalities in the country, and the rural penalty paid disproportionately by indigenous populations (Téllez Vázquez, Ruiz Guzmán, Velázquez Isidro, & López Ramírez, 2013).…”

“…In modern times, and particularly after the second half of the 20 th century, the global dominant tendency has been to simplify these systems into intensive, technical monocultures, unchaining multiple negative socio-environmental impacts in the process. Among these impacts are the loss of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and agrobiodiversity, and a high dependence on toxic agrochemicals (Altieri 2009, Altieri & Toledo 2011, Barkin & Suárez 1982, Emanuelli et al 2009, Holt-Gimenez & Patel 2009, Godfray et al 2010, Torres & Rojas 2015. An expression of this process in Mexico are the intensified agave plantations of the haciendas pulqueras during the 19 th and part of the 20 th centuries, as well as plantations associated to the growing agave spirits industry of tequila and mezcal, particularly since the end of the 20 th century and up to the present (Ramírez-Rodríguez 2004, Valenzuela-Zapata & Macías-Macías 2014.…”
