The purpose of this study was to trace the contraceptive history of sterilized women and identify the associations between educational, sexual and obstetric variables and the women's age when they underwent the procedure for tubal ligation (TL). This is a retrospective documentary study performed at the Lígia Barros Costa Natural Birthing Center in Fortaleza, Ceará, with 1423 records, dating from 2005 to 2008, 277 of which referred to sterilized women. Data analysis involved applying the calculation of frequencies, Pearson's chi-square test and correlation of Pearson/Spearman. Sterilized women represented a population with low education, marital union, and a history of infrequent use of other contraceptive methods other than condoms and the pill. Numbers of pregnancies and abortions/miscarriages were related with the age of TL, unlike the variables of education and the age of the first sexual intercourse. With this knowledge at hand, nurses can improve their look towards women looking forward to TL, and thus strengthen education strategies and promote greater diversity in the alternatives for contraception.

The purpose of this research is to describe the process of seeking and undergoing surgical contraception by women of a low-income community in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The ethnonursing research method was followed and data were collected with seven key and 11 general informants. The three cultural categories described (a) the difficulties women encountered with nonsurgical contraceptive methods, (b) the obstacles and barriers to obtaining surgical contraception for low-income women, and (c) beliefs and values of and about women who have undergone tubal ligation procedures. The cultural theme was that "being operada was the realization of a great dream." Leininger's sunrise model provided a framework for the discussion of the findings and implications for socially and culturally congruent nursing care.

Trata-se de um artigo extraído de Tese de Doutorado que teve como objetivo conhecer a prática das enfermeiras na assistência à mulher em um serviço público de saúde. Traz um recorte dessa prática, referente à atuação das enfermeiras no campo da regulação da fecundidade. O material empírico foi produzido por meio de oficinas de reflexão e, analisado pela técnica de análise do discurso, sob a abordagem teórica de gênero. A análise revelou que, em sua prática, as enfermeiras valorizam as vivências sexual e reprodutiva das usuárias, mas o poder institucional, neste incluído o poder médico, limita a participação das enfermeiras na construção da autonomia e da liberdade reprodutiva das mulheres.
