This article examines the impact of Japan’s mottainai concept on civil engineering practices, focusing on the waste of materials, financial resources, and harmonisation of structures with the environment. The authors highlight the global challenges of environmental and social imbalances in the context of global warming. The Japanese concept of mottainai is presented as the key to shaping the civil engineering approach. The inefficient use of raw materials was analysed in terms of material waste. A transition to a closed-loop economy is recommended, emphasising the need for resource efficiency. In the context of financial resources, the need for efficient budget allocation and project management is emphasised. The section on harmonising structures with the environment focuses on aesthetics, environment, sustainable mobility, and an integrated approach to urban planning. Civil engineering projects should combine functional efficiency with respect to the environment, and the mottainai concept can be a tool for achieving sustainability in civil engineering. Innovative solutions, such as intelligent energy management systems, are recommended to improve construction efficiency.

Action detection of construction equipment is critical for tracking project performance, facilitating construction automation, and fostering construction efficiency in terms of construction site monitoring. Particularly, the auditory signal can provide additional information on computer vision‐based action detection of various types of construction equipment. Therefore, this study aims to develop a visual–auditory learning network model for the action detection of construction equipment based on two modalities (i.e., vision and audition). To this end, both visual and auditory features are extracted from the multi‐modal feature extractor. In addition, the multi‐head attention and detection module is designed to conduct the localization and classification tasks in separate heads in which different attention mechanisms for each task are applied. Particularly, the content‐based attention mechanism and the dot‐product attention mechanism are, respectively, adopted for spatial attention in the localization head and channel attention in the classification head. The evaluation results show that the precision and recall of the proposed model can reach 86.92% and 84.00% with the adoption of the multi‐head attention and detection module, which has proven to improve overall detection performance by utilizing different correlations of visual and auditory features for localization and classification, respectively.

The Spatial Differentiation and Driving Forces of Ecological Welfare Performance in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

Ecological welfare performance contributes directly to human well-being and regional sustainable development. Improving the regional ecological welfare performance in the process of pursuing green and sustainable development demands theoretical innovation and empirical exploration. Based on the super-efficiency SBM model, this study evaluated the ecological welfare performance of 108 cities during the period of 2009 to 2019. The Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition and spatial convergence model were employed to analyze the differences in ecological welfare performance across and within the study area and explore the underlining causes of such spatial differentiation in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the upper, middle and lower reaches. It can be seen from the results that: (1) the overall difference in the ecological welfare performance of the Yangtze River Economic Belt is associated with a fluctuating downward trend during the study period. Regional and inter-regional differences were revealed and hypervariable density was identified as the main source of the differences. (2) The ecological welfare performance of the Yangtze River Economic Belt has absolute and conditional β convergence, and the ecological welfare performance of each city-region and surrounding urban areas has a positive impact on each other. (3) The difference in the spatial-temporal differentiation trend is manifested by the difference in the convergence rate. The cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River have the fastest convergence rate, followed by the cities in the upper reaches, and the cities in the lower reaches are the slowest. This geographic difference is mainly driven by the combined effects of industrial structure, urban characteristics, environmental regulation, foreign direct investment, and transportation accessibility. Finally, it is proposed that future policies should focus on the imbalanced regional development in the study area, and each region needs to explore ways to improve local ecological welfare performance according to local conditions, and ultimately promote the overall green, coordinated and high-quality development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
