Polarization properties of specular and dense multipath components in a large industrial hall

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the polarization characteristics of specular and dense multipath components (SMC & DMC) in a large industrial hall based on frequency-domain channel sounding experiments at 1.3 GHz with 22 MHz bandwidth. The RiMAX maximum-likelihood estimator is used to extract the full polarimetric SMC and DMC from the measurement data by taking into account the polarimetric radiating patterns of the dual-polarized antennas. Cross-polar discrimination (XPD) values are presented for the measu… Show more

“…The mean DMC XPRs ranged from 5.2 dB to 7.7 dB, which were 4 or 5 dB lower than the SMC XPRs. The DMC XPR tends to be several dBs lower than the SMC also in the lower frequency measurements [19] [20] [21]. The mean DMC CPRs were approximately 1 dB, which were almost the same as the SMC CPRs.…”

“…The result showed that the power ratio of the DMC to the total received power ranged from 23 % to 38 %, and the PDP of the DMC almost followed the exponential decay distribution that is described in the RiMAX algorithm. The polarization domain characteristics of the DMC were also investigated in an industrial hall in the 1.3 GHz band [19], in a large hall in the 1.3 GHz band [20], and in urban environments in the 4.5 GHz band [21]. The results showed that the DMC had polarization dependencies.…”

“…Similar results are reported in [ 28 ] for outdoor environments at 5.2 GHz, which found DMC power contributions ranging from 10% of the total channel power, even up to 90%. Currently, only a few more studies have been conducted regarding the influence of DMC [ 5 , 6 , 26 , 30 , 31 ]. It was shown in [ 32 , 33 ] and [ 34 ] that the DMC increases the level of the reconstructed eigenvalues, resulting in a better approximation of the measured eigenvalue structure of the MIMO channel.…”

“…In particular, the double-directional modeling of the radio channel has attracted a lot of interest because it gives a better physical insight into the wave propagation mechanisms in real environments. The effect of DMC has been investigated on the angular properties of the radio channel in [ 5 , 6 , 20 , 24 ], the polarization characteristics in [ 23 , 25 , 26 ], the clustering of multipath components in [ 1 , 27 ], and the channel capacity in [ 28 , 29 ] for outdoor and industrial scenarios, respectively.…”

“…In [11], the authors present SISO (single input single output) measurements at 5.85 GHz for communication of industrial robots in an automation cell. In [12], an analysis of the polarization characteristics of specular and dense multipath components in a large industrial hall at 1.3 GHz with 22-MHz bandwidth using RiMAX estimator are presented. Ultrawideband measurements were also performed from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz in [13] and statistical models were established.…”
