Polarization Orderings and New Classes of Polarization Indices

Abstract: This paper explores equivalent formulations of the polarization ordering first proposed by Foster and Wolfson. Motivated by the class of polarization indices proposed by Foster and Wolfson, we have developed a class of generalized Foster-Wolfson indices. In addition, a new class of polarization indices satisfying a set of desirable axioms is also derived. .hk!. We thank two anonymous referees for very helpful suggestions and comments.

“…The 'normalization axiom' of univariate polarization measurement (Wang and Tsui (2000), Chakravarty and Majumder (2001)) states that polarization reaches its minimum value (= 0) when all the individuals have the same income, i.e. in the case of an egalitarian distribution.…”

“…These pioneering papers have been followed by many others, among them Chakravarty and Majumder (2001), Esteban et al (1999), Wang and Tsui (2000), D´Ambrosio (2001), Gradín (2000), Duclos et al (2004). All these papers study polarization in terms of the distribution of incomes and measure how much this distribution spreads out from its center, dividing the population into at least two groups that are homogeneous and well separated from each other.…”

“…This category includes the ER indices, proposed by Esteban and Ray (1994), and the EGR indices, proposed by Esteban et al (2007), both designed for general cases of polarisation, as well as the measures proposed by Wolfson (1994Wolfson ( , 1997 and by Wang and Tsui (2000), designed specifically for the bipolar case. The second category includes the Z-K index, proposed by Zhang and Kanbur (2001).…”

“…The EGR measures seem, for various reasons, to be preferable to those proposed by Wolfson (1994Wolfson ( , 1997 and Wang and Tsui (2000). First, they are theoretically derived from the establishment of conflict models.…”
