Polarization Lidar Measurements of Dust Optical Properties at the Junction of the Taklimakan Desert–Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that dust aerosols may accelerate the melting of snow and glaciers over the Tibetan Plateau. To investigate the vertical structure of dust aerosols, we conducted a ground-based observation by using multi-wavelength polarization lidar which is designed for continuous network measurements. In this study, we used the lidar observation from September to October 2020 at the Ruoqiang site (39.0°N, 88.2°E; 894 m ASL), located at the junction of the Taklimakan Desert–Tibetan Plateau. Our re… Show more

“…These values of LR are consistend with the assumption of a LR of 44 sr used for the Klett inversion for this case study. It is also consistent with LR of desert dust considered in other studies ( [47,48]).…”

“…The PDR was calculated by Equation (2) of reference [50]. The planetary boundary height (BLH) was calculated using a maximum difference search algorithm that incorporated the TABC and volume polarization ratio (VDR) measured by multi-wavelength polarization lidar at wavelengths of 532 and 355 nm, respectively [51].…”

“…Six aerosol types were described in the vertical feature mask (VFM, version: 4.20) of CALIPSO Level 2 product, including clear marine, dust, polluted continental, clean continental, polluted dust, and smoke. Polarization measurement is very useful to distinguish dust from other aerosols (Z. Huang et al., 2018; Sugimoto & Huang, 2014), even dual‐wavelength polarization can improve the identification of aerosol types (Dong et al., 2022; Z. Huang et al., 2020; Zhang et al., 2022). Among them, continuous dust and polluted dust were selected to identify the dust layer in region a (Figure 1).…”
