Polarization control of an x-ray free electron laser oscillator

Abstract: High-intensity, fully coherent X-ray radiation with a tunable polarization over a wide spectral range is of great importance to many experiments. In this paper, we propose a tapered crossedpolarized undulator configuration for X-ray free electron laser oscillator (XFELO) to produce arbitrarily polarized X-ray pulses in hard X-ray region. A numerical example utilizing the parameters of the Shanghai High-Repetition-Rate XFEL and Extreme Light Facility (SHINE) is presented to demonstrate the generation of polariz… Show more

“…Due to dispersion, the crystal only functions properly in a very narrow bandwidth from 10 −2 to 1 eV depending on the desired polarisation resolution/purification. And their emittance/acceptance angles are also limited around milliradians, which is a match to the character of the XFEL [91][92][93]. The polarized XFEL probe with over 10 10 photons also has a good capability to resist unpolarized noise.…”

“…In this article, we investigate the generation of ALP's flux in a three-wave mixing between the strong quasistatic electric background fields in plasma and a x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) probe field [89][90][91][92][93]. The calculation is based on the 'aγγ' process that treats ALP field as a scattering material for light field and utilizes electromagnetic field as the source term in ALP's wave equation.…”

“…Furthermore, by utilizing a crossed-planar undulator, an XFELO can generate polarization-controllable fully coherent hard X-ray pulses, with a polarization degree of 99% and a polarization switching rate of 20 kHz. 81 This scheme consists of two cross-configured planar undulators in which two orthogonally linearly polarized field components are generated separately. By inserting a fast phase shifter between the two undulators, the phase difference between the two linearly polarized components can be controlled.…”

“…Being fully coherent and offering controlled polarization [1][2][3][4], the x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) is at the heart of advanced techniques in fields such as materials science and surface physics. Currently, several XFELs machines have been constructed or are in operation [5][6][7][8].…”
