Polarimetric Measurements of Surface Chirality Based on Linear and Nonlinear Light Scattering

Abstract: A molecule, molecular aggregate, or protein that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image presents chirality. Most living systems are organized by chiral building blocks, such as amino acids, peptides, and carbohydrates, and any change in their molecular structure (i.e., handedness or helicity) alters the biochemical and pharmacological functions of the molecules, many of which take place at surfaces. Therefore, studying surface chirogenesis at the nanoscale is fundamentally important and derives various app… Show more

“…Because chiral structures exhibit a polarization-dependent interaction with light, optical analytical techniques are well suited to sense and characterize chirality. , Chiral objects are optically active, meaning that their enantiomers respond differently to polarized light. The first type of optical activity is dichroism, in which a chiral object’s absorption of light is polarization-dependent .…”

“…To examine the chirality of molecules, the devices polarimeters and circular dichroism spectrometers are useful and sensitive (Gogoi et al, 2021). Homochirality (100% enantiomeric excess) is a strong indicator of a chemical system assembled in a delicate and organizational manner (Blackmond, 2010).…”
