Polarimetric Measurement of Jones Matrix of a Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator

Abstract: A polarimetric experimental method was developed to determine the Jones matrix elements of transparent optical materials without sign ambiguity. A set of polarization dependent transmittance data of the samples was measured with polarizer -sample -analyzer system and another set of data was measured with polarizer -sample -quarter-wave plate -analyzer. Two data sets were compared and mathematically analyzed to obtain the correct signs of the elements of the matrix. The Jones matrix elements of a quarter-wave p… Show more

“…Polarimetric experimental methods are available to determine the Jones matrix elements of transparent optical materials without sign ambiguity. 102 For scattering tissues, the direct measurements of Jones matrix elements can be done using a two-frequency Zeeman laser, which produces two laser lines with a small frequency separation (∼250 kHz) and orthogonal linear polarizations, 38 or by the OCT technique. 15,103 However, more often, Stokes or Mueller polarimeters based on intensity measurements of polarized light are used.…”

“…The first one models the liquid crystal molecules and how they affect light 7,8 . The second one ignores the physical mechanism of how light is affected and considers only the light variations [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] . This second method has the advantage that can be used for any SLM, as it does not require prior knowledge about the SLM fabrication materials.…”

“…Several methods have been developed to achieve a suitable characterization of LCDs. They can be classified into two groups: (1) a model for the liquid crystal molecules is developed and the internal parameters are obtained [10][11][12][13], and (2) the LCD is considered as a polarization-changing device and its macroscopic parameters are searched for [14][15][16][17][18]. The first group suffers from the drawback that all LCDs are different and not necessarily all models can be applied to any LCD, nor is it known a priori which model must be employed for a specific model.…”
