Point spread function reconstruction for SOUL + LUCI LBT data

Abstract: Here, we present the status of an ongoing project aimed at developing a point spread function (PSF) reconstruction software for adaptive optics (AO) observations. In particular, we test for the first time the implementation of pyramid wave-front sensor data on our algorithms. As a first step in assessing its reliability, we applied the software to bright, on-axis, point-like sources using two independent sets of observations, acquired with the single-conjugated AO upgrade for the Large Binocular Telescope. Usi… Show more

“…2 Based on this tests, we can confirm that the MICADO PSF-R Application has reached at present a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) corresponding to TRL=7. Further details on the PSF reconstruction of LBT/SOUL+LUCI data can be found in this proceeding (Simioni et al 2022).…”

“…The scientific evaluation of the PSF-R tools is currently on-going for extragalactic cases (e.g. galaxy morphology, clumps), as detailed in this proceeding (Simioni et al 2022). We have also developed tools and a pipeline to evaluate how uncertainties on the reconstructed PSF translate into uncertainties on scientific measurements (and viceversa).…”

“…• a contact-less voice coil deformable mirror controlled in position using capacitive sensors 15 for optical turbulence correction SOUL is the optimal benchmark for the MICADO PSF-R development, see also Simioni+ (2022). 16 We develop this activity within the MAST&R working group, and gathered contributions mainly from INAF-Arcetri (SOUL data) and INAF-Padova (MICADO PSF-R team) producing a radial elongation of the PSF centered on the reference star, see Figure 1.…”
