Point-of-Care Ultrasound of a Shoulder Effusion in a Child With Septic Arthritis

Abstract: Point-of-care musculoskeletal ultrasound can facilitate diagnosis of joint effusions and help guide management of suspected septic joints. This case report describes a previously healthy pediatric patient with acute onset shoulder pain and fever who was found to have leukocytosis and bacteremia. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) demonstrated a unilateral shoulder joint effusion.
