Point-of-Care Testing: General Aspects

Abstract: Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) has been highlighted in the health care sector in recent decades. On the other hand, due to its low demand, POCT is at a disadvantage compared to conventional equipment, since its cost is inversely proportional to the volume of use. In addition, for the implementation of POCT to succeed, it is essential to rely on the work of a multidisciplinary team. The awareness of health professionals of the importance of each step is perhaps the critical success factor. The trend towards the c… Show more

“…POCT can be used to improve patient flow within the clinical setting and may even provide indirect cost effectiveness advantages compared to centralized laboratory testing, considering increased resource management and more efficient patient care [3,34]. Shortening the turnaround time is another asset of the HiF system, specially when delays compromises the patient's health: on an intensive care unit setting, the time of analysis shows great influence over a physician's conduct [35], thus the patient can greatly benefit from a faster, yet precise result.…”

“…POCT refers to a clinical test that can be performed on the patient's bedside without the need for complicated equipment and specialized laboratory examiners. It samples on-site and analyzes immediately, eliminating the complicated processing procedures required for sample testing in the laboratory and quickly obtaining medical test results [129]. At present, the most commonly used POCT include blood glucose test paper and urine pregnancy test paper.…”

“…Every medical technology has its strengths and weaknesses. Depending on the affected group, advantages and disadvantages of bedside diagnostics can be further observed from the patient, healthcare workers and government or healthcare funder perspective [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], see Table 1 .…”
