Stroke is a widespread condition that causes 7 million deaths globally. Survivors suffer from a range of disabilities that affect their everyday life. It is a complex condition and there is a need to monitor the different signals that are associated with it. Stroke patients need to be rapidly diagnosed in the emergency department in order to allow the admission of the time-limited treatment of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Stroke diagnostics show the use of sophisticated technologies; however, they still contain limitations. The hidden information and technological advancements behind the utilization of biomarkers for stroke triaging are significant. Stroke biomarkers can revolutionize the way stroke patients are diagnosed, monitored, and how they recover. Different biomarkers indicate different cascades and exhibit unique expression patterns which are connected to certain pathologies in the human body. Over the past decades, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and its derivative N-terminal fragment (NT-proBNP) have been increasingly investigated and highlighted as significant cardiovascular biomarkers. This work reviews the recent studies that have reported on the usefulness of BNP and NT-proBNP for stroke triaging. Their classification association is also presented, with increased mortality in stroke, correlation with cardioembolic stroke, and an indication of a second stroke recurrence. Moreover, recent scientific efforts conducted for the technological advancement of a bedside point-of-care (POC) device for BNP and NT-proBNP measurements are discussed. The conclusions presented in this review may hopefully assist in the major efforts that are currently being conducted in order to improve the care of stroke patients.

Antibiotics are nowadays used and abused worldwide in common veterinary practice to treat diseases, prevent infections, and promote animal's growth. Drug resistance occurrence is a relevant phenomenon that can inactivate the antibiotic. Moreover, antibiotics used for animals are also found in milk and it poses serious health risks to humans. Another negative effect is related to milk processors since antibiotics cause detrimental effects on cheese and yogurt starter bacteria. Given its consumption as both beverage and derivatives, milk is one of the most regulated products in food industry. Nowadays several commercial tests are available to investigate antibiotics in milk, but they generally provide a qualitative result, require bulky procedure, and are time consuming. In this paper, we investigate the use of a chromogenic cephalosporin to quantify the concentration of cloxacillin-a -lactam difficult to be detected by using "cowside" screenings which is the drug of choice in the method of mastitis control. The proposed measurement method and prototype have been demonstrated to be able to detect cloxacillin in milk at concentrations lower than the MRL set by the European Commission. Moreover, they are also able to detect the illegal practice of using -lactamase to degrade -lactams in milk.

Quantitating ultra-lowc oncentrations of protein biomarkers is critical for early disease diagnosis and treatment. However,most current point-of-care (POC) assays are limited in sensitivity.Herein, we introduce an ultra-sensitive and facile microbubbling assayf or the quantification of protein biomarkers with ad igital-readout method that requires only as martphone camera. We used machine learning to develop as martphone application for automated image analysis to facilitate accurate and robust counting.U sing this method, post-prostatectomy surveillance of prostate specific antigen (PSA) can be achieved with adetection limit (LOD) of 2.1 fm (0.060 pg mL À1 ), and early pregnancy detection using bhCG can be achieved with aof0.034 mIU mL À1 (2.84 pg mL À1 ). This work provides the proof-of-principle of the microbubbling assayw ith ad igital readout as an ultra-sensitive technology with minimal requirement for power and accessories,facilitating future POC applications.
