“…Myofibroblasts expressing either CD90 or Pdpn have been observed in several settings, although CD90 interactions are reported to block fibrosis. 52,55,56 These a-SMA þ costaining patterns were often complex, yet consistent with a narrow focal plane through contorted, twisting cells (Supplemental Figure S5). Myofibroblasts run parallel to the fibers and like with CD34 þ SFC, the staining patterns are additionally dictated by the plane-ofsection of the fiber bundles.…”

“…Podoplanin is specifically expressed by lymphatic endothelial cells but not blood vascular endothelial cells [20]. Podoplanin has also been reported in normal cells other than lymphatic endothelial cells, such as peritoneal mesothelial cells, osteocytes, glandular myoepithelial cells, ependymal cells, stromal reticular cells and follicular dendritic cells [21], and was observed in intimal smooth muscle cells in atherosclerotic aorta [22]. In the present study, podoplanin expression was seen in the intima/media of AAA, but not co-localized with smooth muscle cells.…”

“…Podoplanin expression was first documented in glomerular podocytes, lymphatic endothelium, and the brain (39). However, podoplanin was not found in blood endothelial cells or pericytes, and smooth muscle podoplanin was identified in advanced, but not early, atherosclerotic lesions (40). Thus, podoplanin is not constitutively expressed in the vessel wall.…”
