Podoplanin—a novel marker in oral carcinogenesis

Abstract: Podoplanin, a transmembrane sialoglycoprotein, is a specific marker for lymphatic endothelial cells which in recent years has gained prominent notoriety for its role in tumor progression and metastasis. It is an extensively studied biomarker for predictive assessment of malignant transformation as well as biologic behavior in both human precancer and cancer, respectively. This review summarizes the association of podoplanin overexpression in oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer with special emp… Show more

“…Accordingly, PDPN expression correlates with decreased 5‐year survival rates of patients with these cancers . Moreover, PDPN expression in precancerous oral lesions (eg oral leukoplakias) correlates with a 3‐fold increase in their transformation into malignancies compared to lesions without PDPN expression …”

“…18 Moreover, PDPN expression in precancerous oral lesions (eg oral leukoplakias) correlates with a 3-fold increase in their transformation into malignancies compared to lesions without PDPN expression. 19 In addition to cancer cells, PDPN expression can be found in cancer associated fibroblasts (CAF). 1,3,12 Figure 1).…”

“…In many cancers, the role of podoplanin has associated with tumor progression and metastasis [46]. Several studies have revealed altered podoplanin expression in various cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma [46]. In addition, previous studies have indicated the potential role of this overexpressed protein in carcinogenesis, in hyperplastic and dysplastic areas in oral mucosa [26,32,47].…”
