Podcast ethnography

Abstract: This article introduces the method of podcast ethnography. The method encompasses three general stages: to explore a podcast from a particular social field, to engage with it through careful, ethnographic reflexivity and to examine the podcast by developing typologies and themes expedient for analysis. Podcast ethnography is beneficial due to its spatial and temporal flexibility; observing a podcast universe can be performed on the move and in parallel with other tasks. This advantage enables a muchneeded brea… Show more

“…Existing literature using podcasts as qualitative inquiry discusses their power concerning knowledge production of aspects of place and its transmission (Kinkaid et al, 2020;Scriven, 2022). Detailed ethnographic approaches to analysing podcasts are just emerging (Lundström & Lundström, 2021), which is why we based our analysis of the podcast workshop on the methodology of triangulation, influenced by research on public radio (Pompeii, 2015). To demonstrate how the co-creation of knowledge on intercultural participation within the online podcast workshop can be exercised, we analysed recordings, transcripts of podcast recordings, and participant observation of the podcast workshop, using grounded theory coding (Charmaz, 2006).…”

“…Podcasts have been increasing in popularity for a number of decades now and this popularity is projected to increase further by up to 25-30% annually (Deloitte, 2020). Inspired by this popularity, the potential of podcasts as a method, particularly in ethnographic research, has been explored by a variety of scholars (e.g., Lundstrom & Lundstrom, 2020;Cook, 2020;Ractham & Zhang, 2006). Reasons for these explorations includes: (1) increased accessibility of research (Singer, 2019;Day et al, 2017), (2) inclusion of more non-formal data (sub)cultures (Lundstrom & Lundstrom, 2020), (3) and as a geographic research tool (Kinkaid et al, 2019).…”

A relatively large subset of podcast-based research includes the usage of podcasts as pedagogical-didactical tools (e.g., Celaya et al, 2020;Drew, 2017).…”

“…Melalui pemahaman ini, siniar tidak menggantikan kata 'siaran', tetapi bisa dikatakan sebagai pendamping media-media siaran konvensional yang telah berkembang sebelumnya. Siniar merupakan media yang terletak di persimpangan antara digital dan nondigital (Lundström & Lundström, 2021). Siniar juga dapat dipahami sebagai arsip audio digital yang diunggah melalui platform daring untuk dibagikan kepada orang lain (Phillips, 2017).…”
