IntroductionEngineering professors involved in community projects strive to enhance engagement through a combination of social sciences and engineering methodologies. Recognizing the growing importance of critical methodologies, particularly those rooted in social justice and community design, researchers have explored their impact on fostering meaningful collaborations between engineers, students, and community partners.MethodsThis study employs a phenomenographic approach to explore how a cohort of engineering professors, students, and community members conceptualize their participation in community-engaged practices.ResultsOur findings reveal a nuanced outcome space comprising five distinct ways in which individuals perceive their community engagement: as interdisciplinary endeavors, addressing community issues, engaging in co-design, and addressing systemic barriers. These conceptual frameworks elucidate a progression in the depth of engineers’ involvement with the community, underscoring the significance of systems literacy and social justice in more intricate contexts.DiscussionThese results advocate for engineers to adopt an active membership approach, emphasizing collaboration, when working on engineering projects within communities, as opposed to adopting passive roles that may undermine the impact of community engagement.ConclusionIn conclusion, a deeper understanding of the varied conceptualizations of community engagement among engineering professors, students, and community members underscores the importance of adopting proactive roles and fostering collaborative approaches in community projects.

Engineering design is typically a collaborative process, and in the era of digital engineering, online collaboration platforms are increasingly being used to perform the work. Despite the development of e-collaboration technologies, there is a significant gap between actual collaboration and what is really needed. However, improving collaboration requires a proper measurement system. Yet, the common methods to measure and improve collaboration are challenging, usually not compatible with digitalized collaboration, and have limited scalability. This paper presents a new data-driven method for measuring, visualizing, and monitoring Active Engagement (AE) in web-based teamwork, which is a key element of effective collaboration. We applied the method in a case study of four engineering teams during a Technology Planning and Road-mapping course. The results suggest that measuring AE in web-based teams, with an available history log, is technically feasible and can meaningfully represent the team's collaboration. The presented approach can be used to upgrade e-collaboration platforms as a toolkit or for further investigation on improving web-based collaborative design and learning through monitoring dashboards and feedback systems.

Purpose: To present, through a case study, two technological tools for the playful-business teaching of entrepreneurship, one called the digital channel "cvivo.digital," and another of a curricular type called "Didactic Contents for Entrepreneurship." Theoretical Framework: The Communication Revolution poses a challenge to one of the oldest and most persistent problems in the world, and technological tools represent determining factors in entrepreneurship processes (González et al., 2020). Design/Methodology/Approach: As a methodological strategy, the phases of conceiving, designing, implementing, and operating (CDIO) were implemented. Although originally a teaching strategy in engineering, it is also applicable to research processes in other fields of knowledge. The stated stages were accompanied by documentary reviews, exercises of participant observation, and pilot testing, leading to the materialization of the technological tools. Findings: The results highlighted the joint management and circulation of knowledge (students-teachers), functionality, usability, and portability of technological tools according to the real context of students and the current and growing challenges of entrepreneurship in Colombia. Research, Practical & Social Implications: The article shows a path to promote and strengthen entrepreneurship in higher education by offering the pillars that can contribute to this important task for society. Originality/Value: The results reflect an innovative way of addressing formative needs and promoting innovation, inviting reflection and experimentation with these forms of university work in various contexts.
