Pneumococcal Infection among Children before Introduction of 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine, Cambodia

Abstract: Vaccination of children with pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was initiated in Cambodia in 2015. To determine baseline data, we collected samples from children in 2013 and 2014. PCV13 serotypes accounted for 62.7% of colonizing organisms in outpatients and 88.4% of invasive pneumococci overall; multidrug resistance was common. Thus, effectiveness of vaccination should be high.

“…We report on invasive pneumococcal disease in children attending a children’s hospital in Siem Reap, Northwestern Cambodia between 2007 and 2012, and describe the antibiotic resistance profiles, serotypes, vaccine coverage and multilocus sequence types on a subset of isolates. This study complements and extends the data from the 2013–4 surveillance study [ 7 ].…”

“…All papers reported resistance rates for penicillin (median 46.6%, IQR 31.8%-58.1%), co-trimoxazole (median 75.2%, IQR 74.5%-79.3%), and 3GC (median 4.8%, IQR 3.4%-8.0%). One of the papers reported isolates from a study of nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae in children (Turner et al, 2015), whereas the others reported isolates from unwell patients.…”

“…AHC is a paediatric hospital located in Siem Reap, a province in Northern Cambodia with a population of around 1 million. Patients admitted to AHC between 1 August 2013 and 31 July 2014, suspected of having meningitis, pneumonia or sepsis and who gave informed consent were enrolled into a prospective study of pneumococcal colonization and disease [ 10 ]. All enrolled patients had NP swabs taken as soon as possible after admission.…”
