PMU Based State Estimation Considering Fault Localization

Abstract

This paper presents an algorithm for detection and location of faults in powernetwork using the minimumnumber of phasor measurement units (PMUs) considering the zero injection buses. A fault in the power system is a failure that interfaces with the normal flow of current.The fault location in power grid is predominantly problematic because of existence of several lateral / tapoffs. In addition, the identification of exact location of the fault in the power system and severity of the faults are challenging due to the bulk and complex nature of the electrical powersystemstate estimation. A PMU placement approach has to find the minimum number of PMUs and theirlocation with maximum coverage under the faulted condition, prerequisite for the projectedalgorithm is also presented. The suggested algorithm is tested and validated on the IEEE 14 and IEEE 30 systems for different fault conditions. The results are compared with recent reputed paper which confirms that the number of PMUsobtained by the proposed placement scheme is minimum and sufficient for detection and location of faults irrespective of faultresistance and fault type.
