PMI: The Photospheric Magnetic Field Imager

Abstract: We describe the design and the capabilities of the Photospheric Magnetic field Imager (PMI), a compact and lightweight vector magnetograph, which is being developed for ESA's Lagrange mission to the Lagrange L5 point. After listing the design requirements and give a scientific justification for them, we describe the technical implementation and the design solution capable of fulfilling these requirements. This is followed by a description of the hardware architecture as well as the operations principle. An out… Show more

“…In this context, instrumentation missing from the STEREO payload are a photospheric vector magnetograph, whose measurements are to characterize the Sun's magnetic field and to drive many relevant physics-based models of eruptive events. A candidate instrument has been described recently by Staub et al [2020] for a potential L5 mission led by ESA Space Situational Awareness Programme [Kraft et al, 2016]. Similarly, an X-ray imager [e.g., would allow to study the link between X-ray non-thermal emission and SEPs in more detail.…”
